Bennett,Tony: Tony Bennett: the Complete Collection

Bennett,Tony: Tony Bennett: the Complete Collection
$693.59

Bennett, whose recorded legacy has been gathered in a 76-disc boxed set titled The Compete Collection, has been doing that for over 60 years: saving our souls with the greatest songs ever written. The Complete box is an absolute necessity, first because it contains several previously unreleased albums, like On the Glory Road and From This Moment On, a live concert taped in Las Vegas that collectors have been salivating over since 1964. But more important, the new box is essential because up to now, Bennett has been the one singer of his stature to have such a large part of his canon unavailable in the digital era. Over the last 25 years, it has been possible to obtain virtually everything ever done by such Bennett peers as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Sarah Vaughan, yet somehow many absolutely classic Tony Bennett albums have never seen the light of day on CD: Hometown My Town, Love Story, Get Happy with the London Philharmonic, Summer of '42, Yesterday I Heard the Rain, Tony Makes It Happen, and many others. Bennett's career has been a long one: the box covers a span of 65 years, starting with that 1946 aircheck (originating from occupied Germany), when PFC Bennett was probably not yet 20, and goes up to Duets II, the last tracks of which (including duets with Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga) were recorded as he was gearing up for his 85th birthday. (In fact, producer Didier Deutsch and engineer Dae Bennett, the singer's son, were already working on this box when Tony had yet to record some of the tracks for Duets II.) The overall effect of the package, 73 CDs and three DVDs, is overwhelming. (The videos include his Grammy-winning MTV Unplugged special from 1994; An American Classic, a documentary produced by Clint Eastwood around the time of Mr. Bennett's 80th; and a very rare filmed concert from 1970 with the London Philharmonic.)

Neil Young Archives, Vol. I (1963-1972) (10 Blu-ray discs)

Neil Young Archives, Vol. I (1963-1972) (10 Blu-ray discs)
$279.98

Any project in the works for two decades is bound to generate its fair share of myths and so it is with Neil Young's Archives, a series of a multi-disc box sets chronicling Young's history. Originally envisioned in the late '80s as a Decade II, the project quickly mutated into a monster covering every little corner of Neil's career. With its escalation came delays, so many that it sometimes seemed that the project never really existed; it was just a shared fantasy between Neil and his faithful. During that long, long wait, fans held tight to the idea that Archives was a clearinghouse of rarities similar to Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series, a treasure trove of unreleased songs and epochal live performances that would trump whatever bootleggers had to offer. While rare and unheard music is certainly a key part of Archives, particularly on the first disc covering the pre-history of 1963-1965, viewing this project as merely a CD box set is wildly misleading. Neil Young has designed Archives as nothing less than an immersive multimedia autobiography, an interactive experience where the music, text, video, and pictures feed off each other, creating a virtual journey through Neil's past. Because this is a biography, Archives, Vol. 1 winds up relying very heavily on previously released recordings, containing almost all of Neil Young, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, and Harvest, key Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young cuts, and the previously released archival live albums Live at the Fillmore East 1970 and Live at Massey Hall 1971. Such a large chunk of familiar material is bound to disappoint any listener expecting Archives to be a rarities-only set, forgetting that its origin was as a sequel to Decade, the triple-LP set that mixed up hits with unreleased tunes. Archives follows a similar blueprint, excavating many rare gems -- some, like "Bad Fog of Loneliness" quite familiar to bootleggers; some, like an extraordinary "Dance Dance Dance" cut with Graham Nash, not -- and placing them neatly alongside his well-known jewels, so the end effect isn't a rush of discovery but ongoing quiet revelation, an impression underpinned by the set's leisurely pace. The entire Archives is designed to trace Neil's evolution, to explain how his dead ends were really detours and how his mood swings weren't all that wild; it preserves Young's history as he perceived it. To that end, the DVD and especially BluRay editions of the set are essential to understanding both the project and Neil himself, so much so that the CD edition feels almost like an afterthought, a skimming of the surface of a deep lake. Often, Young delayed Archives due to the limits of technology, a claim that seemed no more than an excuse to keep the project incomplete, but Archives in its BluRay incarnation lives up to all of Neil's promises over the years, coming close to collecting everything -- lyrics, press, artwork, TV performances, doodles, scraps of every sort -

Collector's Box, Vol. 4: 1981-1982

Collector's Box, Vol. 4: 1981-1982
$111.19

The 1980s revival of King Crimson amassed the talents of new recruits Adrian Belew (guitar/vocals) and Tony Levin (bass) with holdovers Bill Bruford (drums/percussion) and Robert Fripp (guitar) from the last 1970s incarnation. Although the quartet would continue through 1984, the five discs in this Japanese box set are limited to this band's formative stages with King Crimson Collectors' Club series volumes Live at Moles Club, Bath 1981, Live in Philadelphia, PA 1982,Live in Berkeley, CA 1982, Live at Cap D'Agde, 1982, and Live in Munich, 1982. Just prior to formally dusting off the King Crimson tiara, the unit was dubbed Discipline. It was under that moniker that they made their public debut at the Moles Club in Bath, England, on April 30, 1981. From an audience-derived source comes a good to very good recording of that gig. The band unveils every selection that would ultimately make up Discipline, the first of its three studio recordings. Nostalgia gets the better of them as the classics "Red" and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 2" are likewise given the kiss of life, thanks in part to Levin and Belew's sonic resuscitation and infusion of fresh sounds. Once a clearer idea of the combo's unique personality had formed, the group's lists became somewhat more predictable. Among the stalwarts of the summer of 1982 were the staples "Thela Hun Ginjeet," "Matte Kudasai," "The Sheltering Sky," "Elephant Talk," and "Indiscipline." However, "The Howler," "Neurotica," and "Red" had become phased out by the Cap D'Agde gig. A rare incendiary and intense "Sartori in Tangier" can be found on the Philly CD and the erstwhile Beat (1983) tracks "Neal and Jack and Me" and "Waiting Man" are well documented on Live in Berkeley, CA 1982, Live at Cap D'Agde, 1982, and Live in Munich, 1982. Interested parties should note that multimedia footage of "Indiscipline," "Heartbeat," and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 2" from Live at Cap D'Agde, 1982 can be enjoyed on either the Noise -- Live in Frejus (1984) home video or the DVD entitled Neal and Jack and Me (2004), which also boasts a significant digital upgrade of the Three of a Perfect Pair: Live in Japan, Rovi Performers: Tony Levin - Stick, Bass; Adrian Belew - Vocals, Guitar; Bill Bruford - Drums, Percussion; Robert Fripp - Guitar

The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992

The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992
$106.38

George Harrison's albums for Dark Horse drifted out of print in the late '90s as his contract with Warner Brothers expired. Over the half-decade, they fetched high prices on the collector's market, as any relatively rare Beatles-related item does, and the demand for these records -- along with the Traveling Wilburys albums, which were part of Harrison's Dark Horse/Warner contract -- never diminished. At the time of his death in November 2001, the albums were being prepared for reissue, but his passing delayed them for a few more years, and it wasn't until February 2004 that the albums -- Thirty Three & 1/3 (1976), George Harrison (1979), Somewhere In England (1981), Gone Troppo (1982), Cloud Nine (1987), and Live in Japan (1992) -- were reissued, both individually and as part of the lavish box set Dark Horse Years 1976-1992. All five of the studio albums have been remastered and are graced with a bonus track or two, while the double-live set has been reissued as a hybrid SACD with a 5.1 surround mix (a nice gesture, but it does raise the question of why wasn't the entire set released as hybrid SACD, the way the 2002 Rolling Stones and 2003 Bob Dylan reissues were). In addition, the box set contains an exclusive booklet and a DVD containing video highlights of the Dark Horse years. It seems like the box would be the definitive word on Harrison's latter-day career, and it very nearly is, but it comes short in a couple of ways. First, there is the aforementioned puzzling decision to release only one SACD in the set, which only highlights the fact that the rest of the discs are standard CDs (which do have very good remastering). Second, the bonus tracks are underwhelming. With the exception of Cloud Nine, which has two songs from the Shanghai Surprise soundtrack, there's only one bonus track per disc, and with the exception of Thirty Three & 1/3, which has the fine "Tears of the World," a demo of a song that's on the album. Harrison has a lot of unreleased material in the vault -- Somewhere In England is notorious for being reworked on Warner's request, so at the very least the excised songs could have been featured on this reissue -- so it's a disappointment that there's not more bonus material here. Third, the DVD isn't nearly as complete as it should have been, containing a ten-minute "Dark Horse Feature," some selections from the Live in Japan video, and the Shanghai Surprise movie, plus seven promotional videos, all prefaced with interview excerpts from Harrison. While the featurette would have been much more interesting if it was expanded to a full documentary, the real disappointment is that this doesn't contain all of Harrison's promotional music videos, with such gems as the lovely "Blow Away" missing in action (some may also wish that the videos had been mixed for 5.1 sound as well). Considering the steep price of the box set, it's hard not to think that this DVD could have been a little bit more thorough. That said, the box set is very wel
