Our cosy home for 4 nights was cell number 4. No, we didn`t have immigration problems – the hostel we checked into in Christchurch was, until 1999 an active prison for the city. It retains a lot of its former character, with heavy cell doors, a long atrium for recreation and meals and a couple of cells contain artefacts and prisoners wall drawings from its days of providing accommodation at Her Majesty`s pleasure. Even parts of the old wall and enormous gates still stand and the drainpipes are wrapped in barbed wire to stop us escaping without paying up. We took a stroll around the centre of Christchurch, a lovely quiet laid back place, the hub of which, Cathedral Square, plays host to a number of talented street performers. We caught one particularly entertaining Australian called Bruce (we kid you not!) doing a mixture of magic tricks, juggling and whip cracking with a good dose of comedy and crowd participation thrown in for good measure. Having worked up a suitable appetite perusing the numerous souvenir shops lining the square, we headed over to the Fudge Cottage in the Art Centre. Fudge Cottage is a small, privately owned kitchen producing just enough creamy confectionary to keep up with the ever growing ……
